The 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting, held in Palau from 30 August to 4 September 2026, delivered important regional commitments on climate ambition, finance, ocean protection and regional cooperation.

Among the key outcomes was the adoption of the Belau Declaration on Climate Change, which reaffirmed the importance of limiting global warming to 1.5°C, strengthened calls for climate finance, and recognised the significance of the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion on climate change. Leaders also advanced the Pacific Resilience Facility and adopted the Pacific Pact on Gender and Climate Action.

However, significant gaps remain, particularly around commitments to phase out fossil fuels, address deep-sea mining and ensure meaningful civil society participation in regional decision-making.

PICAN’s analysis examines the major outcomes, key wins and critical gaps from the meeting, and what they mean for Pacific climate justice advocacy moving forward.
