About the Event

WHAT: On the margins of the Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting in the Cook Islands, the Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN) is holding a virtual press conference, recognising the critical need to amplify the voices of Pacific civil society and non-state actors.

The primary objective of the virtual press conference is to provide a platform for Pacific civil society representatives and experts to articulate their perspectives and recommendations on the pressing climate and development-related issues facing the Pacific Islands.

As Pacific leaders gather amidst a backdrop of multiple global crises, we must recognize the increasingly complex landscape in which Pacific agendas and priorities, particularly concerning the climate crisis, must now contend with wider global agendas. Major powers vie for attention and influence, further emphasizing the need for unity and amplified advocacy.

The press conference aims to increase awareness and urge immediate action from Pacific Islands Forum Leaders and the global community. The issues to be covered during the Press Conference include Fossil Fuel Free Pacific, Australia’s bid to co-host COP31 with the Pacific, West Papua, Climate Finance and the Loss and Damage Fund.

WHEN: 5pm, Monday 6th November (Cook Islands local time) / 3 pm Tuesday 7th November (FJT, GMT+12)

WHERE: Virtually on Zoom.
