Varea Romanu

Biography

Varea Romanu is an environmental professional with nearly a decade of experience in International Organisations. Her expertise lies in project coordination, grant management, and community engagement, focusing on climate change, plastic waste management, nature conservation, and the sustainable use of natural resources in the Pacific region. Her career in conservation is deeply rooted in childhood memories of exploring the ocean, swimming in rivers, and trekking through bushlands to school or church. These experiences fostered a heartfelt connection with the land, oceans, and vibrant ecosystems that shaped her upbringing.

Varea holds a degree in Environmental Management and a Postgraduate Diploma in Climate Change. She is currently pursuing a Master's in Environmental Management at the University of the South Pacific, conducting research on the effectiveness of Nature-based solutions for mitigating sea-level rise impacts on the island of Rotuma in Fiji, where she has paternal ties.

Her commitment to advancing environmental management knowledge and addressing real-world challenges, particularly the impacts of climate change on vulnerable communities, drives her passion. She eagerly seeks to apply her unique blend of academic knowledge and practical experience to contribute to impactful environmental interventions in the Oceania region.

The Pacific Islands Climate Action Network (PICAN) is a regional network of civil society organizations working on climate change issues in the Pacific Islands region.

With four established national nodes and more than 190 member organisations throughout the region,  PICAN works to empower  Pacific Island communities and their leaders to be active players in the global climate change arena.
